AXF Natural is building a production facility for Haematococcus pluvialis with 5% natural astaxanthin for use in aquafeed with synthetic-level pricing and superior performance on the Canary Islands, Spain. First commercial-scale production planned for January 1st, 2028!

Why use Natural Astaxanthin in Aquafeed

and why choose us?
Algae is the original source of astaxanthin in the food chain. Used in your aquafeed, it increases your product’s natural profile, allowing the aquaculture companies using your product to market their fish as a cleaner, more natural choice.
Natural astaxanthin has higher antioxidant capacity than synthetic alternatives, as it mostly occurs as the 3S,3′S stereoisomer. This results in healthier fish (less antibiotics), and potentially healthier human fish consumers. Also, while synthetic astaxanthin is usually produced in a protected form, natural astaxanthin is largely esterified which naturally improves stability.
Other than synthetic alternatives or astaxanthin from yeast, which need to be dispersed in oil, and coated afterwards, our product may be mixed right into the feed before extrusion. EU: Accepted as functional feed material as covered by the Catalogue of Feed Materials (Reg. (EU) 68/2013, Part C 7.1.1 ‘Algae’) US: FDA designates Haematococcus algae meal (i.e. dried algal biomass) as a color additive exempt from certification, under 21 CFR § 73.185
AXF’s production facility is based on four years of research and development on how to slash the cost of production. Due to this, we can provide natural astaxanthin sourced from Haematococcus pluvialis competitively to synthentic and natural alternatives.
